Overview
A 65-question diagnostic across 10 domains that goes deeper than IT Asset Management on software: governance, data and counting, entitlements, license positions by vendor, purchasing controls, SaaS, open source, audit defense, optimization and measurement. Written for the software asset manager who needs to answer: are we licensed correctly for every piece of software we use, can we prove it in an audit, and are we paying only for what we need?
Detailed Description
Software is where IT asset management carries the most money and the most audit risk. Vendors count by core, cluster, user, document and agent, change their rules every year and audit regularly, while SaaS, cloud and AI credits spread spend across business teams. This deep dive follows the practice in order: mandate and roles, understanding what is installed and owned, calculating and signing license positions, controlling how software arrives, managing SaaS and consumption credits, open source and banned software, defending audits, optimizing renewals, and measuring results. It complements IT Asset Management v6.9.6, which remains the hub and owns the shared registers and procedure.
Assessment Details
Audience
Software Asset Manager / License Manager / ITAM Manager / IT Director / Procurement and Vendor Managers. Secondary: Legal, Infrastructure and Cloud Leads, Application Owners, CISO, IT Finance.
Purpose
Shows where software audit exposure and wasted license spend sit, and what to fix first. Moves the organization from reacting to vendor audits to defending signed license positions and buying only what is used.
Effort
Initial assessment: 4-6 hours with the Software Asset Manager, plus 1-2 hours each with Procurement and Legal, IT Operations and Finance. Evidence gathering: 2-3 weeks. Reassessment: 3 hours.
Cadence
Annually, with a six-monthly pulse on License Compliance and Effective License Position for tier 1 vendors. Reassess after a vendor audit, acquisition, major cloud migration or enterprise agreement renewal.
Framework Alignment
