Overview
A 65-question diagnostic across 9 domains that evaluates how the service catalog is governed, fed, structured, run on its platform, offered and fulfilled, maintained, retired, adopted and measured, including AI services, reusable platform offerings and access by AI agents. Written for the Service Catalog Manager or Head of IT Service Management who needs to answer: does our catalog give every consumer, human or agent, an accurate view of what IT offers, and does it drive how services are requested and delivered?
Detailed Description
A service catalog should be the front door to IT. In many organizations it is a list on the intranet that nobody trusts: entries are out of date, prices and service levels are missing, requests still arrive by email, approved AI tools are nowhere to be found, and retired services leave behind users, licenses and integrations nobody cleaned up.
This assessment checks whether the catalog has a policy, a defined process with clear accountability, a governing board, owners and funding. It checks whether new services are justified, reviewed for overlap, forecast and readied before launch; whether entries follow a data standard, are easy to find and request, and show the right items to the right people; and whether the platform is controlled, integrated, secure and readable by AI agents as well as people. It covers whether offerings carry service levels, costs and change linkage, including AI tools and reusable platform services such as pipeline templates; whether entries stay accurate as services and their AI components change; whether retirements are clean; whether people actually use the catalog; and whether adoption, speed, satisfaction and shadow IT drive improvement.
Each question is scored on three dimensions: Documented, Implemented and Effective. This separates practices that exist only on paper from practices that run but are never written down, and from practices that run but are never measured.
Assessment Details
Audience
Service Catalog Manager / Head of IT Service Management / Service Owners / Platform and Portal Owners. Secondary: Service Desk and Fulfillment Leads, IT Finance, Enterprise Architects, AI Governance and Platform Engineering leads.
Purpose
Shows whether the catalog accurately represents what IT delivers and drives how services are consumed, where entries go stale or fulfillment breaks down, whether AI tools and platform services are offered under control, and which fixes will most raise adoption, speed and trust.
Effort
Initial assessment: 10-14 hours of interviews with the catalog owner, service owners, fulfillment and service desk leads, platform owners, IT finance and AI governance. Evidence gathering: 2-3 weeks, including a portal walk-through, an agent interface test and samples of entries, requests and change records. Reassessment: 6-8 hours.
Cadence
Annually. Reassess after an ITSM platform change, a major portfolio or reorganization change, the introduction of AI agents that request or fulfill services, or a significant drop in portal adoption.
